We're going to be looking at codes in which each letter of the alphabet is represented by a different letter. The code we're looking at in this lesson is called the REVERSE CODE or the MIRROR CODE. You'll see why in a minute. But first, do you know your alphabet? Yes, of course I do! No, I'm too stupid! |

Underneath, I've written out the alphabet in REVERSE order. Z to A. Of course, really smart kids like you know their alphabet backwards as well as forwards. Don't they? Now take your pencil and paper, and do exactly the same thing yourself.

To ENCODE a word we take each letter and replace it with the letter immediately underneath it. So, if we put the word CODE into this code it comes out as XLWV. To DECODE a message written in this code you do exactly the same thing. So if you see the word HVXIVG it really means SECRET. Put your own name into code and see what happens!

A becomes Z and Z becomes A. M becomes N and N becomes M. If you remember these letter pairs it will make it easier for you to recognize this code next time you see it.
